All of his cardiology appointments have gone smoothly, and he is off all diuretics. We celebrated his birthday last week, and today is the one year anniversary of James’s first heart surgery! In the world of heart patients, the anniversary of someone’s open heart surgery is called their heartiversary. We hope that 5, 25, and 50 years from now this day will not be a sad reminder of his suffering, but that it can be a celebration of his strength. It is a day that represents three surgeries, and more to come someday. Seeing pictures of him post op is an amazing reminder of the miracles in his life. All this time we have been asking for specific prayer requests, but now that James is in good health, here are some broader things you can pray for, if he is ever on your mind. Pray that he is able to avoid any respiratory illnesses, which should not be life threatening anymore, but will be harder for him to get over than a normal child. Pray that his INR is stable and that we can keep his medication dosage for his blood thinner working well for him. Pray that his home testing machine starts being more reliable, so that he does not have to get weekly lab draws. We have been having issues with its results not matching the lab draw results for some unknown reason. Pray that he is able to grow and play and enjoy his childhood despite the restrictions he will face, and that he will stay free from any brain injuries that are made more likely due to the blood thinners. Pray that he is able to make it more than a couple years before growing out of his current mechanical mitral valve. Pray that medical advancements continue to make heart surgery safer and provide more options for kids like James. Pray that another drug is developed someday that protects mechanical valves as well as warfarin, but with lower bleeding risk. Pray for the babies who were wheeled into the OR today for the first time, and their parents who sit with them in the CICU tonight. Pray that one year from today their baby will celebrate their first heartiversary at home. One year is a huge milestone and we want to say thank you for being on this journey with us, praying for us, and for spreading awareness about congenital heart disease. God is Good! His surgery lasted about 6 hours and everything went as they expected. His surgeon told us that James’s native valve tissue was a mess, we are very glad we chose to do surgery when we did. He came out of surgery with a good heart rhythm and his heart squeezing well. Amen! Thank u for all your prayers! Prayer Requests: Speech therapy will be starting on Monday to work with him taking a bottle again. He hasn’t taken a bottle in 6+ weeks, so this will be a big step towards a more “normal” life. Pray that his pain can be controlled as he comes off of sedation, and that he can start feeling like himself again over the next week. Pray that he does not develop any infections with his central line, arterial line, chest tubes, or incisions. Also that he won’t get sick with any viruses or respiratory illnesses during his recovery. To get the chest tube removed, his lungs need to stop accumulating so much fluid. So please pray that the diuretics he is on will help keep the fluid build up at bay. Eventually, he will need to come down off of such strong diuretics, but for now they are a good thing. Pray for all of the other kids that are here in the hospital right now— specifically the children of heart families we know: Caroline, Naomi, Vivi Kate, and Slohn. This is what his mechanical valve looks like. In this photo it looks large, but the one he had placed is smaller than a dime. We hope it is years before we see this view again. This is the most significant risk factor that his cardiologist has been watching out for, so he decided that it is time to get the ball rolling on surgery number three. This surgery will be a mitral valve replacement. His heart is still very small and he is very young, but six months ago today we first heard the term heart failure. He was much younger and smaller at that time. So we have hope that the progress he has made will be enough. Today we will be deciding which type of replacement to do, which hospital to do the surgery at, and which surgeon to do the surgery. Please pray that we will have clarity and peace with whatever we decide. James’s cardiologist has been extremely helpful and has provided us with a lot of information and support as we make these decisions. We are very thankful to have such a caring and involved doctor on James’s team. Mitral valve replacements in babies are very rare, and there are only a couple dozen babies that have this type of surgery each year in the United States. We have spoken with other families who have been in our situation and some have children who are thriving, and some have required more surgeries and are not doing as well. We don’t know what path this next surgery will take us down but we know God will be with us, and with James. Despite his circumstances he is still a happy boy. His favorite things right now is playing with toys, reading books, listening to The Happy Song, and learning to roll over. Our favorite thing is waking up to him smiling at us every morning. Prayer Requests: That James would miraculously start to improve, and that he will not need another surgery anytime soon. If he does not improve, that he will at least stay stable for a while before surgery is needed. That we will be able to gain clarity and feel confident in choosing which type replacement valve to use, if a replacement is needed. That James’s breathing would fully return to normal, and that it would not require a lot of increases in diuretics to stay stable. That his incision continues to heal and does not cause him pain, especially as he starts moving around more freely and resumes tummy time. That James is kept from sickness during his recovery period. On our flight home, we were sitting next to someone who was coughing the whole flight, so we pray he did not catch anything. That Greer is able to catch up at work when he returns to the office next week, and that we are able to adjust to our new normal with new medications, appointments, and feeding needs.
