Our Outreach Ministries provides opportunities for serving the world outside our church walls. Our efforts are local and global, personal and social—but always grounded in the compassionate love of Christ.
Love INC Backpacks
Before the beginning of each school year, we put together 100s of backpacks filled with school supplies for local children in need. This multi-organization drive is coordinated by Love INC, an interchurch agency head-quartered in San Pedro, which we support through-out the year as well.
Christmas Angel Tree
Each year before Christmas, we participate in an adopt-a-family effort which helps provide presents for needy families in our area, as coordinated through regional and interchurch agencies.
Food & Clothing Ministries
Each month, we collect food staples for local direct service ministries; we also maintain a basket for the donation of clothing. The food tubs and clothing basket are located in the entryway to our fellowship hall.
We have a collection tub for donations to the Carson Animal Shelter, including clean used towels, sheets, blankets, dog beds, pet toys and food.
We provide a number of helps to people both in and outside our congregation, who are in employment transition, including internet leads, resume writing, mock interviews, prayer support, and general job-search advice. Learn more…
Prayer Shawl Ministry
This ministry provides prayer shawls for loved ones in need of comfort. Some go to participants within our church; many go to those outside our congregation. The Prayer Shawl Ministry gathers each Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm, and every Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 pm, for crafting, learning, sharing and the blessing of the shawls. The ministry is open to all ages and skill levels, and to men and women. Learn more…
His Hands Cancer Support Group
This ministry of our church offers support to those whose lives have been touched by cancer—those who have cancer, cancer survivors, their loved ones and caregivers. His Hands serves people within our congregation, and many outside our church as well. Care baskets are put together for those in need; education, prayer and crisis support are also offered. Our His Hands group has raised tens of thousands of dollars through the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Learn more…
First Christian Church is currently involved in the start-up of Family Promise of the South Bay, an interfaith effort to help move families with children out of homelessness. In the next year, we look toward working with at least 12 other South Bay congregations to help provide shelter, job training, and spiritual support to these needy families as part of a national network of Family Promise affiliates.
As part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Pacific SW Region, we support All Peoples Community Center in South Central Los Angeles, and Eastmont Community Center in East LA, and their work with underprivileged youth, continuation high school, day-care, parenting classes, and job training.
Week of Compassion
This is the emergency relief agency of our larger church body, the Disciples of Christ. Through this ministry, we are present to serve those who fall victim to disaster, both natural and social, in North America and throughout the world. Though we receive a special, over-and-above offering for Week of Compassion each February, donations to Week of Compassion may be made any time throughout the year.
Special Day Offerings
We support the work of the Disciples of Christ throughout North America and the world with Special Day Offerings at Christmas, Easter, Pentecost and Thanksgiving. These over-and-above gifts go to a number of colleges and seminaries, new church starts, mission workers, and the ministries of our Regional Church.
